Back in DaWoods again

Hello all, it's tonight's guest blogger. I arrived this afternoon after an uneventful trip and apparently brought the first warm day of the season with me. Everyone has commented on how nice the weather is today. (Must be my sunny personality.)

I must say it is good to be here. There is something magical about these woods. People say that about my space in New Mexico, too, but I really feel it here. There are bits of green peeking up through the ground and the birds are singing.

In terms of an update, I don't think there's much new to report. dp gave me her big smile when I arrived and wants to ensure that I am getting enough chocolate. I think Kevin has done a good job of describing her in and out states. Just when you think she is off in her own world, she says something that lets you know she's right here with you.

Rumor has it that we may be seeing some of you this weekend. I'm looking forward to it!
Nancy

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the warm weather. Now can you keep it here? We look forward to seeing you Saturday. In the meantime, kiss Kevin and Diana for us.

No promises on the weather. It snowed twice in New Mexico last week.

It's supposed to rain Saturday morning and then clear off and be very nice. Walker and I will probably pop in after we kayak. We're both jonesing pretty bad to get out on the water.

I'm sitting in the VW service area where both my cars are being attended to. Mine is routine maintenance, but Robyn's is the sort of thing older cars do when the long term warranty runs out. I'm concerned that the vehicle we know and love may be slowly morphing into something entirely different. No! banish the thought from my head!

Nancy, I'm so glad you're here. Enjoy the beauty and open up that house and let Spring in. It's been a long cold winter. But not lonely. Little darlin'.

I think dp is weaker, but maybe that's because I saw her late the other night. I maybe see some neurological "tics" sometimes. Still, it's definitely Diana who pipes in and comments on something when you think she's napping. Every time she does that it's really cool.

This is an interesting exercise, because I can't get weepy or maudlin in the VW Customer Waiting Area. There is no written code, but this just isn't done. One sits quietly and pretends to have something to do. Displays of emotion should be brief and, if possible, superficial.

I'm going to go out and look at a used New Beetle on the lot. Caitlin will need a car soon, unless she bails me out and lands a C in a class. Then she'll be hitching for the summer, and daddy will be spending his money on other things.

Well, I guess I missed Ellen's stuffed shells.

Saturday was a great example of my life as a sandwich generation person. Walker and I started out by taking advantage of a break in the weather to have a really good paddle on Lake McBride. It was about sixty and cloudy and we explored a whole section of lake, worked on our paddling rhythm ("cadence" to you uninitiated) and generally congratulated ourselves for being out. After we finished we stopped by a little place by the lake and had really good burgers and rings.

While we were sitting there eating these "hand pounded, chopped sirloin, made by Doug himself, with pride," my mother called. I let it go to voicemail.

The message was: "Your friends came on bicycles and stole my cats. You may think this is funny but I DON'T!!" I didn't get into the potential logistical issues involved in absconding with cats on bicycles. (Even if you allow one cat per bicyclist, unless you were pulling a Burley or something, and the cats were heavily sedated, the getaway would be complicated by fur and claws, to say the least.) Mom was inconsolable and holding me very much accountable, so rather than argue I put on my best administrator voice and told her I'd "look into it."

"Thank you," she said huffily. I called Summit Point, where staff were unaware of the unfolding drama in their midst, but were able to locate two fat indolent cats, languishing under the bed. No bicyclists have been spotted.

I went up later to put up shelves and unpack Mom more and she didn't mention the cats. I asked if she found them and she said they were fine. I mentioned that she had called "in a lather" and had blamed me. She replied, smiling, "well, who ELSE am I going to blame?" I mentioned that she had also been concerned that I had taken her money and she said "well, I didn't think you'd stolen it, but maybe just borrowed it." Same thing.

Caitlin went to prom last night, something she's been planning since the age of 4. She was absolutely beautiful in a blue satin dress, large hair, and jewels. I'll post more of such details on my own blog, so as not to monopolize this space with her great beauty. Her boyfriend Nathan was attentive and sweet and I think it went off without a hitch, at least that is what she mumbled at 5 a.m. when she got home. She claimed she was sober and also not pregnant. Life is good. No kidding, though, she is really stunning in that dress.

What a day! We fell asleep about 9 p.m. in front of the TV. Ma and Pa Kettle with laptops in lap, dozing off to Solitaire in front of the t.v.

Between kids, logistics, embezzlement, and cat-napping, it's been a very busy weekend already.

I might sneak down tonight and give a few smooches.

OK, C-man, you're off the hook with me. I can't speak for the Crawley girls, however.
I hope you can stop by sometime before I have to leave on Wednesday.

Ahhh Sam, I just love those times...Bree was also most excellent in her shiny blue prom dress. Beautiful strong and smart. Glad Mom's cats are safe and sound. Glad she has you to blame, and laugh with.

I'm going with the “things I’ve learned from Diana” theme this morning…

I learned to play my body like a drum, hands flapping between knees and shoulders, smacking each other or a foot now and then. I could never do it like she could. My efforts swiftly degenerated to some form of “galloping horse”, while she totally could make me dance with her solos.

She taught me to respect young folk of all ages, and how to teach my children instead of just expressing my frustration that they didn’t already know stuff I thought they should.

The rhythms of earth and moon, body and mind, heart and soul are echoed in, and enhanced by one another. Sometime this feels good…sometimes not so much.

The very best I can do is to figure out what I want, then go about making that happen.

Whining doesn’t work with some people who love me.

We needed to be heroes, because women need heroes to show them how many choices are available to us when we open to them and make faith in ourselves.

No matter our intentions, we will reflect our mothers more than is comfortable for either one of us. Accepting this doesn’t hurt as much as rejecting it.

Telling the truth is really important. My perceptions of what the truth is are really affected by how I feel about myself in that moment.

Question Authority.

Sam-The Crawley girls forgive you...I think prom pictures coincided with stuffed shells, although the shells were great, you don't get too many proms. I'm checking your blog for photos. The Crawley family does request that you admire the new mulch by the stream and pond though. We are all working to improve the Iowa economy and Hy-Vee's business. It was great to see Nancy, of course and Diana seemed pretty good. Colleen caught the brunt of a couple of zingers. Eyes open or closed, Kevin and Nancy are correct, dp is not missing much. When we left, I told her I'm going with Sam's plan, keep coming back. I'm not sure how Kevin feels about that. :)

A huge thank you to clan Crawley for Da Woods Spring spruce-ups. Beauty abounds bringing grins to us all.

Marie's drivers and nurses say how fine it is to come down that lane and really feel nature and spring. I know Diana would love what you've done to help her gardens sing. I sure do.

;) good hummus and granola too!

Diana smiled for me a lot today. No pain at all, she says.

love,
dd

Hey dd,
Thanks for postin that dp is not in pain. I hadn't seen anything when I check back often and I was wondering.

-Best,
Rodney

I'm glad to hear that, too, Dede. I've been over late the last two times and she looks really tired. I started checking out with Kevin about whether we should get out of their hair and let them crash and he reminded me that he is capable of telling us when he's tired of us. Good point. Just letting my mothering part out.

No one seems to want to be mothered by a middle aged man. s.

Thanks for updating us you guys. I know Kevin has a ton on his plate, so if you fill us in when he doesn't, we really appreciate it. I think mom is heading over today since Nancy is leaving. Be nice to her. Katie

Olive arrived around noon and I'll be leaving about 5. dp still says no pain, just some "tinglies". She's been awake more today, too.
