Apologies for not having blogged of late. -- it tires me to walk three feet, both of the cateract surguries have been cancelled. Since the brain surgery and radiotherapy started the eyestrain is awful and getting worse. doc, you might want to hire carl's wife, patty, to edit your book if time is an issue. everyone here seems to think my recovery is taking longer than expected, especially Kevin and his workplace *winces*
thank you kevin, sam, nancy, dd and everyone else who has helped keep the blog current.
Kevin reads me the new comments daily. Thank you all for taking time to comment.
i do have a douple of requests: if you have sent flowers, please let us know so we can add them to our thank you note list.
it seems one company was happy to leave them anywhere four days later. if the woman who found them on her door and then called us we would never known they had been sent. so we do know who sent them, thanks ann arbor and terrace place, ny!

So good to have you back at the computer dg....I have no excuse for messing up my a qnd q's on the keyboqrd.
Love you....

I think what the doctors and maybe some of us have forgotten is that dp was unable to eat or drink anything for more than two weeks prior to the surgery. That means she went into surgery severely malnourished and weak and has had to recover from that as well as the surgery. So tell those HR people to back off!
Yea- tell those HR people to back off. I generally volunteer Tim or Annie to do those things...and since she knows the lingo, I think Annie is our girl! We're happy to hear from you dp! Little steps are still steps and even if there are a few that go back, as there are bound to be, you're moving forward and we're all with you! Happy Solstice a day early! Love, Katie
Hi DP!!! I was grinning as I read your post - simply pleased that you are again able to do so. Progress made obvious, even to those of us who are too far away. Ironically, as I read your blog entry and as I type this comment, I am half listening to a panel of experts talk about the brain on Charlie Rose (dvr'd) - the twelfth in his special science series and the second show in which they have focused solely on the brain. It is certainly amazing how much they (we?) have learned about the brain in even the very last few years.
Merry Soltice! Happy Xmas - etc. With the crushed ice fallen and the days beginning to grow longer again - hopefully this coming new year will be a lot brighter and more promising than the one we are ending. Keep walking - even three feet at a time. I LOVE YOU!! perry
Typing is an over-rated skill. The back-space key is my favorite one!
I'm mourning the death of my lap-top, which will no longer accept power from external sources and only had a pea-size battery. The agency I work for does not feel laptops are a good use of resources and so I will have to get my own replacement. Sitting upright makes blogging a lot less cozy. The gnomes in IT got my stuff off of it, which is good.
Kevin, in talking with DP the other day, I was wondering about whether you guys could negotiate with the monsters in the insurance industry for some home health aide time. My insurance haggling skills are more on the mental health side, but I'd be willing to conspire with you a little. It might help with those bastards in HR. Let's chat.
For those of you who share long history with me, a sad note. My first wife, Nancy died the day before yesterday at the age of 47. She was apparently in poor health with a blood clot in her leg but also very depressed since the death of her older sister about 5 months ago. An old mutual friend who called said it was not clear whether or not she took her own life or succumbed to the clot.
She apparently did not have a better life after we parted ways, and I learned some things about what ensued that are very sad. Having grieved that relationship long ago, I just feel bad that she never really found any peace, at least none that lasted. Perhaps she has some now.
This entry sort of sounds like I'm more sorry about my laptop. Please understand, Nancy's was a human tradgedy, and the laptop just a technical one. Not comparable categories.
In either case, with one more day of work left and Christmas family foofaraw fast approaching, I am grateful for all of you, for some specific choices I made earlier in my life, for laptop data which can be recovered, and for a safe and loving family.
It's going to snow and ice again, Kevin, so if you need to have a driveway party let me know. Seth needs excercise, too.
Dear Diana and Kevin,
I'm so happy to know that you are almost done with the radiation. Thanks for the email greeting. I've been busy with my brother and work this week. Mark, my brother, had his gall bladder removed on Wednesday and is home recuperating now. Since he is single, we took him to the hospital and took him home etc. He has two weeks off from teaching, so he should be good as new by the time school resumes. Fred's older sister (she's 74) is staying with us over the holidays. She is battling lung, breast and bone cancer. She too has already gone through the chemo and radiation treatments. She's still able to live in her own apartment and function fairly well, but doesn't drive anymore. Fred's going down to Adrian to get her on Sunday and bring her to Frankenmuth. We're all going to the Bavarian Inn for dinner on Christmas Day and back to our house for dessert. Nothing very exciting. The Christmas lights here are beautiful-- both the town and the homes. I guess we'll probably take a drive after dark and check them out. Happy Winter Solstice to you! Keep feeling better!! You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Carol and Fred
Happy Winter Solstice, All! I, too was concerned about what seemed lack of progress, so these last two blogs, especially dp's,(and Nancy's reminder) are like manna! And I'm just crying too hard to say anythong more for now! I love you. A. Noni
Kevin and Seth and I had a wonderful time clearing the ice off the "flight deck." The ice was slightly melty and so gave up its grip on the concrete. Seth, who confided that this was the first excercise he'd had since the last time we played raquetball together (sometime during the Truman administration), kept claiming we were "done" with much hope in his voice, but eventually we really WERE done, and I scooted home just in time to welcom 8 inches of new snow.
I don't think Iowa City got 8 inches, but I'm sure glad we made room for it on the flight deck. Yikes! Yesterday I woke to discover that the snow had drifted in our front yard -- the WHOLE front yard. Walker and I spent two hours digging out. The snow was between 1 and 3 feet deep. Since the only time I feel like buying a snow blower is when I'm shoveling drifts, I don't own one. When summer comes and they go on sale, I am busily (and cheaply) convincing myself that shoveling snow is virtuous good excercise.
At any rate, Seth probably needs MORE excercise, so don't hesitate to call on us again.
Cool Yule! S.
Hello from Pulm Rehab-
I have been keeping up with you via the computer. I'm sorry your life has had as many potholes lately as Iowa City's streets. I think of you often. Lisa asks about you. I haven't seen her for a while around this busy time of year. Her children are keeping her busy.
